A hospital that added a charge
NHS Scotland's University Crosshouse Hospital put a 10p charge on single-use hot drinks cups. Reusable cup use went from 1% to 43%, cutting coffee cup consumption by 157 a day, close to 60,000 a year.
A borrow scheme in the Highlands
The Highland Cup Movement checked out over 1,000 reusable cups and reports a 92% return rate, alongside a 27% increase in customers bringing their own cup.
A deposit plus a charge
A business in the Portobello and Joppa pilot ran a cup deposit alongside a 20p charge on disposables, and reports disposable cup use falling by more than 95%.
These are other organisations' results in their own settings, not a forecast for yours. What they have in common is that the cup was paired with something: a charge, a deposit, or a place to hand it back. A cup on its own changes less than a cup with a reason to return it.
Before you order
Five things worth settling first
